San Diego Supercomputer Center Launches TeacherTECH 2004

Program Educates San Diego K-12 Teachers on Real World Technological Applications for the Classroom

The San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) will launch on Monday, July 19, TeacherTECH 2004, three one-week courses designed to allow San Diego K-12 teachers to explore and examine different multimedia and web applications for use in classroom curriculum.

"This training program helps teachers stay ahead of the curve and, more importantly, ahead of their students," said Rozeanne Steckler, director of SDSC's Education Department. "When they walk out of our doors on the last day, teachers are armed with a number of powerful technological tools to help engage their students."

TeacherTECH 2004 is comprised of three sessions. The first, TeacherTECH I - Computer Basics, will be held July 19 - 23 and is designed for the beginning computer user.

Topics covered in TeacherTECH I include:

  • Computer components
  • External hardware
  • Web browsers and content
  • Plug-in technology
  • Digital photography
  • An introduction to Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint

The second two workshops, TeacherTECH II - Introduction to Web Design, will be held July 26 - 30 and August 2-6. This course is designed for the more advanced computer user. Advanced topics include:

  • Understanding the web development process
  • Using Macromedia Fireworks for layout, image manipulation and compression for the web
  • Using Macromedia Dreamweaver for web page programming, templates, and site management
  • Discussion of usability concepts and Section 508 compliance for web sites
  • Graphic design for web projects
